So few posts!

I find myself posting less and less, although I do faithfully read other's thoughts. I have been hugely busy the last month, working extra for folks taking vacations. I guess I should be happy, it will bring more cash in, but it takes as much time as when I worked full time before. And I have left that, because it was too much. It leaves me uninspired and tired.
Teaching continues to be a joy, despite one very difficult student. The person in question is a returning student that has some severe impairements. I feel like there is a 5 year old in the class. The student constantly has a comment to make, most of the time it is irrelevant, and long winded. I find myself interrupting, to free the class from the endless triviality of this person's tedium, which does not need to be shared. Most students are laughing, and sometimes I must make huge efforts not to join in with them as some comments are so far from what the class discussion is focusing on, it is laughable. When in groups, this student must monopolize the conversation with the anecdotes and keep the others from focusing on the work at hand. Once, this student declared: "I'm gonna take my shoes off" and proceeded to do so. I had to face the board not to laugh, and soon afterwards requested that shoes needed to be put on. Comments like: "I have to go make a phone call" are made while I am in mid-sentence lecturing, or like this week, entering the classroom 50 minutes late: "I bought the book," a required course pack for the class (We are, after all, in week nine of an 18 week semester!) Yes, this person is trying, and often throws me off rhythm, but the other students make up for it, and I am learning as much as they are. I do love learning!

Today is a gray day, the coast edge veiled and colors muted. I will go celebrate my friend the Bombshell's birthday and the unveiling of the sex of the baby she is carrying. Should be a blast. Maybe I will have some photos to post!

That does sound frustrating. Only 9 more weeks!

I'm glad you are enjoying the teaching.

Is there anything you can do administratively about this person? Presumably s/he does want to be in the class, but the distraction to the other students must be severe, and from your description it's hard to imagine this person will pass the course anyway.
